Calling Kristina Olson a path-breaking researcher doesn’t begin to describe all the doors this year’s winner of the National Science Foundation’s (NSF’s) most prestigious prize for young scientists has opened.A social and developmental psychologist at the University of Washington (UW) in Seattle, Olson is the first person from her discipline to win the 42-year-old Alan T. Waterman Award. She’s also the first woman since 2004 to receive the $1 million prize. Although scientists from every field that NSF supports are eligible, only three social scientists—the previous two were men—have ever captured the Waterman, named after NSF’s first director.Olson’s research on the social development of transgender youth has expanded the traditional boundaries of academic psychology. And her plans to use a big chunk of the prize money on a new summer internship program for undergraduate minority students also may be unprecedented for Waterman winners.Even so, Olson is far from satisfied by that impressive string of firsts. “I don’t think a woman of color has ever won,” she says. (Two black scientists, both men, have been honored.) “My goal is to use the money to move us in new directions, because things aren’t going to just change on their own. And unless we make room for all of the best people, it will be hard to make progress on any of society’s problems.” Read the whole story: Science More of our Members in the Media >
Southwest Antennas has introduced two new RHCP & LHCP body worn patch antennas for C-Band radios. Designed to be light weight and easily worn and hidden in tactical clothing, these body worn antennas are ideal for use in multi-antenna MIMO / MANET radio applications such as handheld and small form factor body worn tactical radios. The antennas are housed in a rugged, waterproof UV stable polycarbonate radome and are built to withstand abuse in harsh operating environments and active situations. The antenna is sealed to withstand immersion in 20-meters (65.6 ft.) of salt water for two hours when the RF connector is mated or sealed with protective end cap. The antenna’s radome measures only half an inch thick, and 2.2 inches in both length and width. A high quality and high performance black chrome SMA(f) RF connector is used to prevent corrosion when the product is exposed to high salinity environments for extended periods of time.Extensive field testing has shown that these antennas provides superior RF performance, ensure long range radio communication links, and provide high data rate throughput when used with MANET / MIMO self-forming, self-healing radio networks, or SISO radio systems. The antenna’s directional RHCP or LHCP radiation pattern and axial ratio below 3dB offers robust network connections and allows radio systems to connect even when users are not directly facing each other or within clear line-of-site, helping to improve system performance. Users of multi-antenna tactical radio systems can utilize one antenna on the front of the body and one antenna on the back of the body, or in other 2 x 2, 3 x 3, or 4 x 4 MIMO antenna configurations in combination with additional body worn or vertically polarized omni-directional antennas. The body worn antenna’s circular polarization properties also vastly improves terrestrial operation in all weather conditions. With an operating frequency range covering 4.4 to 5.0 GHz the design offers excellent performance in the DoD, Federal Law Enforcement, and NATO bands. The design offers 4.2 dBic peak gain when worn on the body and 4.5 dBic of peak gain when operating in free space making this product versatile and usable in both body worn and off body applications. The horizontal beamwidth of the antenna on the body is 104 degrees and it is 110 degrees when operating in free space. On the body the vertical beamwidth is 88 degrees and it is 90 degrees when operating in free space. In addition to body-worn applications, the free space performance of these antennas make them ideal for many field applications in point-to-point or multi-antenna mesh configurations, including fixed site infrastructure and mobile antenna applications. Part # 1065-038, RHCP 4.4 to 5.0 GHz Body Worn Antenna Part # 1065-039, LHCP 4.4 to 5.0 GHz Body Worn Antenna New MOLLE pouches are also available for these antennas, adding additional mounting options for users of tactical vests, bags, or other MOLLE gear. If the virus drives up demand for services, communities may also see a change in how calls are prioritized and, if workforce ranks are diminished, how fast responders arrive, say experts on emergency preparedness. That means dispatchers may be more selective about when to send an ambulance,, The growing number of COVID-19 cases highlights a new threat faced by the nation’s first responders — including emergency medical technicians, ambulance crews and some firefighters. Nelson: “It’s pretty common knowledge that there is a demand on that. We here at the borough are working to make sure our first responders and health care providers are taken care of on that, and we need to keep them safe.” Still, there is a worry among the rescuers on the front line. Nelson: “We are meeting and accessing all of those PPE, protective equipment needs, for our first responders and trying to project out what those needs are in the future.” Despite the uncertainty, Nelson says plans are underway. To help guide emergency personnel, dispatchers are ramping up their screening of callers to identify potential cases of the coronavirus. Hospital emergency management directors are reviewing how to conserve and repurpose in-demand supplies. And EMT and fire departments are taking inventory to make sure they have enough protective equipment for responders in the field. FacebookTwitterEmailPrintFriendly分享First responders, often used to chaos, told KSRM News that that novel coronavirus has put them in uncharted waters. Incident Manager with the Borough Office of Emergency Management Dan Nelson said paramedics within the fire department try to screen patients over the phone, while rushing to help them, in hopes of knowing what protective gear to wear when they get there. Per the OEM, Dispatch and Fire/EMS: Crews are working to maintain operations; however, public are not be allowed to enter these facilities. First responders within the borough will continue guidance specific to call outs.
Dele Alli is set to be called up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad despite the threat of a FIFA ban, it is understood. The Three Lions welcome Slovenia to Wembley next week for a World Cup qualifier that is swiftly followed by a trip to the Baltics to take on Lithuania.England’s place in Russia is all but assured given they have a five-point cushion at the top of Group F, but Southgate may have to deal without Alli for the end of qualification – and even beyond.FIFA has confirmed that its disciplinary committee will decide by Thursday what, if any, punishment the Tottenham midfielder faces for raising his middle finger during the qualifier against Slovakia.Alli could be hit with a ban and/or a fine for September’s incident, with a lengthy suspension meaning the 21-year-old could potentially even miss the start of the World Cup next summer.A shorter ban would impact October’s qualifiers, but it is understood Southgate intends to name the midfielder in his squad on Thursday.Alli’s involvement would depend on FIFA’s decision, but with World Cup preparation time at a premium it would allow him to be part of the group, if only for a short while. The Tottenham midfielder and FA are hoping that some leniency is shown by world football’s governing body.Video evidence has been submitted along with written statements in a bid to back-up their argument that Alli’s ill-judged gesture was aimed at team-mate Kyle Walker rather than the officials or any Slovakia player. The FA is hoping to get wind of the decision before Southgate announces his squad on Thursday. But a FIFA spokesperson told Press Association Sport earlier in the week that “disciplinary decisions are usually notified and communicated a few days after the hearing”.Alli’s availability is an unwanted complication ahead of Thursday’s squad announcement at St George’s Park, where the England boss will be unable to call upon highly-rated Nathaniel Chalobah again. The highly-rated Watford midfielder was in line for his England debut having been involved in the squad for the first time last month, but the 22-year-old has had to undergo surgery on a knee injury sustained in training. The club’s performance director Gavin Benjafield expects to see Chalobah “re-integrating into the squad well before the New Year”, although the injury has thrown a season that could end at the World Cup off kilter. That injury, along with Alli’s potential ban, narrows England’s midfield options, with Adam Lallana, the country’s reigning player of the year, and Danny Drinkwater also both out through injury.James Ward-Prowse has only started two Premier League games for Southampton this season but Southgate may turn to his former under-21s captain, who was given his international debut against Germany in March.Saints team-mate Nathan Redmond, who also made his bow in Dortmund, is pushing for a place in the squad, as is West Ham’s Michail Antonio if he can overcome a groin complaint.Leicester defender Harry Maguire impressed behind the scenes in the previous meet-up and is likely to receive a second call-up, but Everton centre-back Michael Keane is a doubt with a foot issue.Nathaniel Clyne and Danny Rose remain unavailable at full-back, while Manchester United left-back Luke Shaw has only played 45 minutes since returning from ligament damage in his foot.Arsene Wenger says Danny Welbeck’s groin injury will keep him out until after the international break, while Arsenal team-mate Theo Walcott will be hoping for a recall. Jack Wilshere only has one substitute appearance and a solitary start under his belt for the Gunners this term.Burnley’s Tom Heaton has undergone surgery on his dislocated left shoulder, but Southgate named four goalkeepers in the last meet-up so Joe Hart, Jordan Pickford and Jack Butland are set to retain their place. Fraser Forster is the main contender if Southgate plumps for four again. Dele Alli could face a FIFA ban 1
1 A conclusive review of all the action in the Championship from February 21 Nelson Oliveira’s spectacular late strike saw Norwich grab a point in stoppage time for the second time in four days as they drew 2-2 with Sky Bet Championship leaders Wolves at Molineux.A Jamal Lewis own goal and Alfred N’Diaye’s header appeared to have the hosts cruising midway through the first half, but Christoph Zimmermann swiftly pulled one back and the Canaries were good value for their point.Timm Klose had snatched a draw in Sunday’s East Anglia derby and the Canaries repeated the trick as substitute Oliveira beat John Ruddy at his near post with a 35-yard effort in added time.Cardiff moved four points clear of the chasing pack in the Sky Bet Championship promotion race as Kenneth Zohore’s scrambled goal earned a 1-0 win at Ipswich. The striker almost collapsed onto the ball before prodding in after 65 minutes as Neil Warnock’s second-placed side boosted their promotion prospects.Ipswich had plenty of the play but could not find a response after sliding behind and they remain lodged in mid-tableKasey Palmer rescued Derby with a stoppage time strike as a pulsating Sky Bet Championship game against Leeds ended 2-2 at Pride Park. The visitors appeared to be heading for victory when Ezgjan Alioski put then in front with 10 minutes to go but Palmer pounced in a crowded area to score his first goal for the club.Pierre-Michel Lasogga had put Leeds in front in the first half before Andreas Weimann punished a defensive mistake just before half-time and the late drama means Derby have now won only once in six gamesBobby Reid’s 16th goal of the season earned Bristol City a 1-1 draw from a superb Championship clash against Fulham at Ashton Gate.Aleksandar Mitrovic fired the visitors in front after 14 minutes, reacting quicker than City defenders to a cleverly-angled ball towards the six-yard box from Cyrus Christie and planting a shot past Frank Fielding from close range. But Lee Johnson’s men levelled after 35 minutes as Reid played a neat one-two with Josh Brownhill inside the area, creating space to beat Marcus Bettinelli with a left-footed finish from a narrow angle.
