Above, Zane Cornejo hugs his father Jamie after a heart-breaking loss.by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — Anyone who fills out an NCAA Tournament bracket knows that when a No. 14 seed knocks off a No. 3 seed that is considered a huge upset.Wellington, the No. 14 seed, woulda, coulda, mighta pulled off that upset with a few lucky breaks and without one major blunder — losing to Buhler 19-7.How close of a game was it statistically? Wellington had 195 yards to Buhler’s 205 in this first-round game up north. This game was decided by the intangibles.Wellington had just two turnovers in the game. But the first one was huge. The thing is it happened in the first 15 seconds. After starting at its own 22, Wellington was called for a hold backing itself up to the 9. Then, Wellington fumbled and Buhler was sitting at the 1 yard line. The clock hadn’t even reached the 11:30 mark of the first quarter.Sam Elliott, no relation to the Hollywood star (or at least we don’t think) then plundered in for the touchdown. Buhler led 6-0 after the missed PAT pass and the few Wellington fans who were there took a deep breath thinking this was going to be a long evening. But it wasn’t.Wellington held tough the rest of the ball game and Buhler’s two other scores came late in both halves. This game was a battle of the defensives. Both teams combined for 15 punts – seven of them by Wellington. Heck, there were only three plays that went for more than 20 yards. The two teams combined for 15 first downs, with Wellington getting six.Travese Love with a 16-yard reception, Wellington’s second most productive offensive play of the night. After that first-quarter gift, Buhler could generate little offense. And in the second quarter with 3:16 left in the second, the game was still 6-0. Then came the run.Wellington was at the 15-yard line, when Zane Cornejo started his marathon jaunt. What started as a simple dive up the middle turned into a Marshawn Lynch Beast Mode moment, that included a stiff arm here and a bounce off a tackle there. By the time Cornejo finished his run he was at the 1. On second down, Zander Vargas would sneak in for the touchdown. The Karsten Gill PAT kick made it 7-6 Wellington.Buhler still had time to recapture the lead, and it got a 40-yard pass reception to move deep into Wellington territory. But the red Crusader defense stiffened and Buhler was soon facing a 4th-and-20 go-to-goal after a Silas Popplewell sack. Then Cade Miller hit Kahalewai McDowell on a 20-yard pass who barely crossed the goal line for the score. Buhler led 12-7 at the half. The third and most of the fourth quarter was basically a punt exchange. Then late in the game, Buhler would complete a 59-yard drive with a Austin Gentery 19-yard touchdown run at the 4:06 mark to give the maroon a 19-7 lead.Wellington did get a spirited drive to midfield, but would eventually turn the ball over on downs. The red Crusaders finished the year at 2-8 and lose a slew of seniors. For the most part, Wellington had two seasons. It started with five futile games in which it appeared clearly overmatched. Then the second half, in which it went 2-2, Wellington looked like an upper-tier Class 4A team. Even Wellington’s 23-7 loss to Mulvane last week was better than any of the first five games.
